Imperial Crypt
The vault under the Capuchin Church was originally intended as a burial place for Emperor Matthias and his wife Anna. Today more than 140 members of the House of Habsburg are interred here. Among them you will find Emperor Franz Joseph and his beautiful Elisabeth, as well as Maria Theresa and her beloved husband Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorrain, who are buried in an elaborate double sarcophagus. The large array of sarcophagi made of bronze, pewter and copper, embodying style elements from the Baroque to the modern, present an imposing picture to the visitor. You will learn many interesting details of the sometimes peculiar burial rituals of the ruling family, including why many of the Habsburgs are buried in more than one place! (admission fee not included).
Duration: 1,5 hours
