Exploring Leopoldstadt

This city walk through Vienna’s second district includes Augarten, Vienna’s oldest Baroque garden, Taborstraße and Nestroyplatz. What used to be sparsely populated pastures, constantly threatened by Danube flooding until the later part of the 19th century, eventually evolved into an entertainment district, beginning in the Biedermeier period. That was the time when the Viennese started taking a liking to Viennese waltz concerts. This “island” located between the Danube canal and the Danube proper was also known as the center of Jewish life in Vienna. This guided tour will provide an insightful look into its eventful history, its diverse cultural institutions (e.g. Augarten porcelain, Vienna Boys’ Choir) and the life of the Jewish community.
