“The beautiful corpse” was for the Viennese, with their macabre sense of humour, the only suitable conclusion to life. Elaborate and expensive funerals were an important aspect of Viennese culture. Hence the reusable coffin with the trap door, which “reform Emperor” Josef II introduced for reasons of frugality and practicality, had to be retracted!
