Johann Strauss

Johann Strauss the Younger was doubtlessly the most famous member of the Strauss family.  But it was his father who composed the “Radetzky March” which is still played as the finale of the widely broadcast New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic. The brothers Josef and Eduard, although trained for other professions, were also successful as composers and conductors.

Our walk will start at Musikverein, which hosts the world-famous “New Year´ s Concert” every year on January 1.  During this concert, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra mainly performs pieces by Strauss. We will then walk to the monument dedicated to the “king of waltz”, Johann Strauss the Younger, located in Vienna´s City Park. The golden statue is one of most widely photographed attractions in Vienna. A stone´s throw away, you will see the “Kursalon”, where Johann Strauss and his brothers used to delight the Viennese audience. At Stephansplatz square we will take the subway to  Strauss Museum, which is also Johann Strauss´s former home. This is where he composed his most famous piece of music, “The Blue Danube Waltz” (admission fee not included).

The Museum of the Johann Strauss Dynasty is the first in the world to encompass the family background and the musical activities of the full Strauss Dynasty (Johann Strauss Father, Johann Strauss Son, Josef Strauss and Eduard Strauss).
