Grinzing Cemetery

Located in a noble district near the Vienna Woods and the “Heurige”, the many mausoleums and elaborate tombs in this cemetery bear witness to the wealthy and prominent members of Viennese society who are buried here. Laid out in terraces with a lovely view of Vienna, the cemetery is the final resting place of a number of celebrities. Among them are the composer Gustav Mahler, writers Thomas Bernhard and Heimito von Doderer and the actors Paula Wessely and Attila Hörbiger. In 2011 the singer and entertainer Peter Alexander was interred here beside his wife. The cemetery, which was established in 1829, is well known for its abundance of splendid monuments dating from the era of Historicism.
